Do I need to change my hand sewing needle?

You should always change your hand sewing needle, however the frequency does depend on the individual sewer and the intensity of your sewing. We always recommend using a new needle for every project which will improve your sewing experience and your fabric will like it too!

Why is my needle making a hole in my fabric?

If the weave of the material is staying open during your stitching, this will most probably mean the diameter of the needle you are using is too large. We recommend using a smaller size needle.

How does the sizing structure work for hand sewing needles?

The general rule for hand sewing needles is the larger the number means the finer the diameter and the shorter the needle becomes within its own needle category type. This downloadable needle guide may assist you.

How does the sizing structure work for sewing machine needles?

The general rule for sewing machine needles is that it is the opposite to the hand sewing needle rule. The larger the number means the larger the sewing machine needle diameter. Sewing machine needle lengths remain the same regardless of the diameter.

Should I change my sewing machine needle?

You should always change your sewing machine needle on a regular basis and not just when it breaks. Like hand sewing needles, sewing machine needles do become blunt after a lot of use. We always recommend between 8 – 10 hours usage however other factors such as the intensity of the stitching and the type of fabric used may reduce this usage time. Using a new needle for every project will improve your sewing experience and your machine and fabric will like it too!

Why is my pin making a hole in my fabric?

If the weave of the material is being pushed open during inserting the pin and remaining open once your pin is removed this will most probably mean the diameter of the pin you are using is too large and therefore we recommend trying a smaller diameter.

How does the sizing structure work for sewing pins?

There is no general rule for sewing pins. We offer a large comprehensive range of quality sewing pins with a variation of lengths and pin heads per diameter. Our size description for the sewing pin is always by length first and then followed by the diameter. However, we also provide you with the equivalent hand sewing needle size as a visual diameter guide.
